The Montréal Climate Partnership
Harnessing stakeholder expertise for agile climate action
The Montréal Climate Partnership (MCP) is an independent initiative bringing together over one hundred economic, non-profit, philanthropic and institutional organizations. Its objective is to mobilize key players in the Montréal community to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 and put the city on the path to carbon net-zero by 2050.
History
The MCP builds on the successful partnership of a group of philanthropic foundations, the City of Montréal and C40 Cities formed in 2018–19 to develop Montréal’s Climate Action Plan 2020–2030. Announced in December 2020 with the unveiling of the Plan, the MCP draws inspiration from leading global engagement models, including those of the Boston Green Ribbon Commission and London Business Climate Leaders. By making the green transition a cornerstone of the city’s prosperity and appeal, the Partnership positions Montréal at the forefront of C40 cities.
The initiative is funded by the Foundation of Greater Montréal, the Trottier Family Foundation, the McConnell Foundation and the City of Montréal.
It officially began activities in January 2021.

Founding Partners
The Foundation of Greater Montréal is committed to serving and listening to its community. In collaboration with its partners, it mobilizes philanthropic resources, disseminates knowledge, and sparks initiatives to support the Greater Montréal community. The Foundation of Greater Montréal has a vision of a community that is free of poverty and discrimination, where all can realize their potential and live in a healthy environment, now and in the future.
The Trottier Family Foundation’s vision is to make a meaningful impact on the world. Its mission is to support organizations that work towards the advancement of scientific inquiry, the promotion of education, fostering better health, protecting the environment and mitigating climate change. The Foundation strives to catalyze and scale transformative innovations, create cross-sector collaborations, and take risks that others cannot.
As the City of Montréal unveiled its bold Climate Plan 2020–2030, the creation of the Montréal Climate Partnership was a vital step for rallying the community around climate action and achieving the Plan’s objectives. The 46 specific actions set out in the Climate Plan will enable Montréal to reach its ambitious green transition targets to decrease the city’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 55% below 1990 levels by 2030, and to attain carbon neutrality in its operations by 2040 and in the agglomeration as a whole by 2050. Through its participation in the Montréal Climate Partnership, the City is clearly signalling its commitment to working hand in hand with economic, community, institutional and philanthropic organizations to transform Montréal into an inclusive, resilient and carbon-neutral city.
